Most people apply for Australian citizenship by conferral. Complete the self-check below to confirm you meet standard general residency requirements:
You must be an Australian permanent resident (or eligible New Zealand citizen) and have held PR status for at least 12 months.
You must have lived in Australia on a valid Australian visa for the past 4 years immediately before applying.
You must not have been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in the past 4 years, and no more than 90 days in the past 12 months.
You must pass character assessments (national police check) and be willing to uphold democratic beliefs and Australian values.

Attending your Australian Citizenship Ceremony & Making the Pledge
The final step to becoming an Australian citizen is to attend a citizenship ceremony, usually held by your local municipal council within 6 months of application approval. During the ceremony, you will make the Australian Citizenship Pledge of Commitment:
The Australian Citizenship Pledge
"From this time forward, [under God],
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey."
After reciting the pledge, you will be formally presented with your Australian Citizenship Certificate. With your certificate, you can apply for an Australian passport and enrol on the Australian electoral roll.
